Chapter 12 - THE SECOND CACHEDaniel found Ethan near the pasture fence.

The boy ran into his arms.
“You’re okay.”
“Dad!”
Daniel held him tightly.
“Did Claire take you?”
Ethan shook his head.
“She came back. But Victor came too.”
Daniel looked toward the stalls.
Deputies were surrounding Claire.
“Did she hurt you?”
“No.”
Ethan hesitated.
“She helped me.”
Daniel stared.
That was not what he expected.
Marcus approached.
“Victor fled toward the north property.”
“He has something,” Ethan said.
Everyone looked down.
“What?”
“A tube. It was inside the feeding trough.”
Daniel’s pulse jumped.
Another hidden cache.
“Did Claire know it was there?”
Ethan shook his head.
“Victor found it.”
Claire sat on the ground several yards away, hands visible while a deputy questioned her.
Daniel walked toward her.
Marcus followed.
Claire looked exhausted.
“What was inside the tube?” Daniel asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Why did you come back?”
“I thought Ethan might find it.”
“And you wanted it.”
“At first.”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
Claire looked toward Ethan.
“Then Victor came.”
“What changed?”
She laughed bitterly.
“A six-year-old told me something nobody else ever did.”
“What?”
“That having reasons doesn’t make what I did okay.”
Daniel stared.
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was cruel to him.”
“You were.”
“I frightened him.”
“Yes.”
“I can’t undo that.”
“No.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
Daniel wanted to hate her without complication.
It would have been easier.
But Ethan had said she protected him from Victor.
That did not erase anything.
It simply made the truth messier.
“Why did Victor want the cache?”
“Because Laura documented everything.”
“What is everything?”
Claire looked at Marcus.
“Your grandfather’s network never ended.”
“We know.”
“No. You know the old part.”
Daniel frowned.
“What’s the new part?”
“Blackwood isn’t valuable because of cattle or land development.”
“Then why?”
Claire lowered her voice.
“Mineral rights.”
Daniel stared.
“What mineral rights?”
“Lithium deposits.”
Marcus stepped closer.
Claire explained.
Fifteen years earlier, geological surveys suggested Blackwood North contained significant lithium-bearing clay.
The information was hidden before land values increased.
Arthur Mercer’s old network had evolved.
Instead of simply stealing foundation money, members were secretly acquiring property rights.
Thomas discovered it.
Laura later found evidence the scheme was continuing.
“If the deposit is real,” Marcus said, “the land could be worth hundreds of millions.”
Claire nodded.
“That’s why everyone stayed involved.”
“And Charles?”
“He tried to control the network after Arthur died.”
“Victor?”
“He wants to sell access to an outside mining company.”
“Your father?”
Claire looked down.
“He helped forge the deeds.”
Daniel understood.
Blackwood North had been transferred illegally.
If Thomas’s original will proved the property belonged to Daniel and Rebecca, all later transactions could collapse.
“What was in Laura’s second cache?”
Claire shook her head.
“But she once told me she had the original geological survey and Thomas’s real will.”
Daniel stared.
“You spoke to Laura about this?”
“Yes.”
“How close were you?”
Claire took a long breath.
“Closer than you know.”
She reached inside her jacket slowly.
A deputy tensed.
Marcus nodded permission.
Claire removed an old photograph.
The same one Ethan had seen.
Laura and Claire together.
On the back Laura had written:
C — YOU CAN STILL CHOOSE WHO YOU BECOME.
Daniel read it twice.
“Laura trusted you.”
“She tried to.”
“What did you do?”
Claire’s voice nearly disappeared.
“I told my father where she was going the night she died.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
“You caused the accident.”
“I don’t know.”
“What does that mean?”
“My father demanded to know where Laura was meeting the federal investigator. I told him she was driving north.”
“Did Patrick send Victor after her?”
“I think so.”
“You think?”
“I never asked.”
Daniel’s hands curled into fists.
Claire began crying.
“I was twenty-six. My father had controlled everything in my life. That doesn’t excuse it.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
“I spent years convincing myself Laura would have died anyway.”
Daniel turned away.
He couldn’t look at her.
Marcus asked, “How did you end up marrying Daniel?”
Claire wiped her face.
“Charles.”
Daniel turned back.
“He arranged it?”
“He encouraged me to attend events where Daniel would be.”
“Why?”
“He wanted someone close to Daniel who understood the network.”
Daniel felt sick.
“Were you supposed to spy on me?”
“Yes.”
“And Ethan?”
Claire looked toward the boy.
“I never expected to love Daniel.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“No one ordered me to hurt Ethan.”
Daniel’s face turned cold.
“That was you.”
“Yes.”
Claire did not defend herself.
“I resented him because he reminded Daniel of Laura. Every time Daniel talked about her, every time Ethan looked like her…” She shook her head. “I became someone I hate.”
Daniel said nothing.
A deputy radioed from Blackwood North.
Victor’s truck had been found abandoned.
Footprints led toward the river.
Then another transmission came.
A second vehicle had been discovered.
An old green Jeep.
Daniel knew immediately.
Evelyn.
His mother was at Blackwood North.
Marcus looked at him.
“If Victor finds her first…”
Daniel didn’t wait.
He ran toward his car.
The second cache held the evidence everyone wanted.
Victor had it.
Evelyn was somewhere nearby.
And Daniel suddenly understood why she had returned after thirty years.
May you like
She wasn’t coming back simply to reveal herself.
She had come back to finish what Laura started.
