Chapter 18 - THE IMPERFECT FATHERDaniel wanted to dismiss the photograph as fake.

Forensic analysis said it was real.

Thomas stood beside Victor.

Cash lay between them.

The date was correct.

Rebecca stared at the image.

“Dad wouldn’t.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Daniel noticed.

“You know.”

She looked away.

“Mom.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Thomas made mistakes.”

“What kind?”

“The kind desperate people make.”

Daniel’s anger returned.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“I know.”

“Did Dad steal money?”

“For a time.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Evelyn explained.

After Evelyn disappeared, Thomas initially continued participating in parts of Arthur’s operation.

Not for personal wealth.

He paid people to keep Evelyn hidden.

He bribed Patrick to stop monitoring Daniel and Rebecca.

He used network money.

“That doesn’t make it legal,” Daniel said.

“No.”

“Or right.”

“No.”

“But?”

“No but.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Your father was not a perfect hero.”

Daniel studied the photograph again.

Thomas had spent years entangled with criminals before trying to dismantle them.

Like Claire.

Like Charles.

The difference was not purity.

It was what they eventually chose.

“What was the cash?”

“Payment to Victor.”

“For what?”

“To create fake travel records for me.”

Daniel exhaled.

So Andrew’s photograph proved wrongdoing.

But not the kind Andrew implied.

Still, Daniel realized something important.

If he publicly presented Thomas as innocent in every respect, someone could use these records to destroy the entire case.

Truth had to include the ugly parts.

Marcus agreed.

“Prosecutors need everything.”

“Even evidence against my father.”

“Especially that.”

Daniel handed over Thomas’s notebook.

No more hiding.

When media eventually learned about the investigation, Daniel issued one statement.

“My family benefited from systems that caused harm. Some members tried to stop them; others participated. We will cooperate fully and make all records public when legally possible.”

Charles heard the statement from his hospital room.

He asked to speak with Daniel.

Daniel almost refused.

Then went.

Charles looked smaller in the hospital bed.

“My son fled.”

“Yes.”

“I helped him become exactly what Arthur wanted.”

Daniel said nothing.

Charles continued.

“I thought protecting wealth protected families.”

“Did it?”

“No.”

“Why introduce Claire to me?”

Charles closed his eyes.

“I thought she could help control Victor.”

“You used my marriage like a chess move.”

“Yes.”

“You knew she had betrayed Laura.”

“Yes.”

“And you still put her near Ethan.”

Charles’s eyes filled with shame.

“I did not know she would hurt him.”

“You didn’t care enough to find out.”

Charles accepted that.

“Will you testify?”

Daniel asked.

“Yes.”

“Against Andrew?”

“Yes.”

“Against yourself?”

“Yes.”

That surprised Daniel.

Charles looked toward the window.

“I am seventy-two years old. I have spent decades explaining my cowardice as strategy.”

Daniel thought of Claire.

At least she had said something similar.

“How many people knew Laura was investigating?”

“More than we realized.”

“Who else?”

Charles named accountants, attorneys and one former federal official.

Then he added:

“There may be someone inside the sheriff’s department.”

Daniel stiffened.

“Marcus?”

“No.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“Convenient.”

“I’m telling you because Patrick had help altering records after Laura’s accident.”

Marcus later confirmed evidence pages had been edited after Patrick supposedly left the building.

Someone else used his credentials.

An internal inquiry began.

Meanwhile Ethan returned to school.

Daniel walked him to class personally.

At the doorway Ethan stopped.

“Dad?”

“Yeah?”

“Will Claire be there when I get home?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

He hugged Daniel.

Daniel held him longer than usual.

On the drive back, the ranch felt different.

Safer.

But empty.

Evelyn had moved temporarily into a guest cottage.

Rebecca visited often.

Sam repaired the storm damage.

The three horses returned to ordinary routines.

One afternoon Ethan sat beside Atlas drawing.

Daniel joined him.

“What are you making?”

“Our family.”

Daniel looked.

Ethan had drawn himself, Daniel, Laura above them as a star, Evelyn, Rebecca and three horses.

Claire wasn’t there.

Then Daniel noticed a small figure far away near a tree.

“Who’s that?”

“Claire.”

“Why is she over there?”

Ethan shrugged.

“She’s not family right now.”

“Right now?”

Ethan looked thoughtful.

“Maybe people can be different later.”

Daniel didn’t know how to answer.

Children sometimes understood complexity better than adults.

That evening Marcus called.

Internal investigators discovered the officer who altered Laura’s file.

Retired Deputy Harold Kane.

Kane had worked under Patrick Beaumont.

They located him at a nursing facility.

He agreed to talk.

Daniel visited.

Kane was eighty-one and frail.

“I wondered when a Mercer would come,” he said.

“What did Patrick make you change?”

“Witness statements.”

“Why?”

“He said it was bigger than us.”

“Did you see evidence from Laura’s crash?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Kane stared at Daniel.

“There was paint on Laura’s rear bumper.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“From Victor’s vehicle?”

“No.”

Daniel froze.

“Then whose?”

Kane swallowed.

“Red paint.”

Victor drove a black SUV.

Claire’s vehicle at the time was silver.

Patrick’s patrol car was white.

Daniel asked:

“Do you know what vehicle?”

Kane nodded.

“Charles Whitmore owned a red Jaguar.”

Daniel’s stomach dropped.

Charles had claimed he wasn’t at the crash.

Kane whispered:

“Victor followed Laura.”

May you like

He paused.

“But Charles was there too.”
