Chapter 13 - The Midnight CallAt one in the morning, my phone rang on the floor beside the open black case.

It was an unlisted number from a regional area code.
I answered it, placing the speaker near my ear without saying a word.
"Did you find the box, Gabriel?" a harsh, raspy male voice spoke through the line. It wasn't Patricia. It was an older man, his tone completely unhurried.
"Who is this?" I demanded, standing up in the middle of the dark room.
"Someone who held your late wife’s signature for fifteen years," the voice replied smoothly. "Patricia was sloppy. She let her personal greed get in the way of a corporate liquidation. She thought she could take your house and keep the fifty thousand dollars in cash for herself instead of remitting it to our accountants."
"The money in this box belongs to my family," I said, my voice turning to ice.
"That money is interest on an unpaid principal, Mr. Torres," the man chuckled softly. "You think you won a grand victory because a local prosecutor locked Patricia in a state cell? Patricia was just a collector. The contract on your estate is still active."
"If you come near my daughter, I'll turn this entire hard drive and Elena's journal over to the Federal Attorney General within the hour," I threatened.
A heavy silence lingered on the line for three seconds.
"You don't want to do that, Gabriel," the man said softly. "Because if federal agents look into those historical freight manifests from 2018 to 2022, they won't see a victim. They'll see a lead driver who transported illegal shipments across three state lines. You'll spend the next twenty years in a federal prison, and your sixteen-year-old daughter will be left entirely alone."
My blood ran cold. The trap wasn't just around my house—it was wrapped around my entire past.
"What do you want?" I asked through clenched teeth.
"Simple," the voice said. "Bring the black plastic case, the hard drive, and the fifty thousand dollars in cash to the old freight depot on the Industrial Highway tomorrow night at eleven. Leave it on the loading dock. In return, we erase the ledger, destroy the secondary manifests, and leave you and Sofia alone forever."

"And if I refuse?"
"Then Prosecutor Gomez gets an anonymous tip tomorrow morning containing your original driver logs from Laredo," the man said, and hung up.
