Chapter 15 - The Loading DockThe night air at the Industrial Highway freight depot was thick with the smell of damp asphalt and diesel exhaust.

Abandoned shipping containers loomed like dark monuments around the perimeter of the unlit parking lot. At ten-fifty PM, my heavy diesel truck pulled into the overgrown gravel drive, its headlights cutting two bright beams through the darkness.

I kept the engine idling, stepping out of the cab carrying the black plastic case in my right hand.

Underneath my dark work jacket, a small wire microphone was taped securely to my chest, transmitting a live audio feed directly to Prosecutor Gomez and a tactical team stationed four hundred meters away behind a line of trees.

I walked steadily toward the rusting loading dock.

"Gabriel Torres," a shadow detached itself from behind a stacked pile of wooden pallets.

A tall, lean man in a leather jacket stepped into the dim light of the single overhead bulb. His face was weathered, with a jagged scar running along his jawline. In his right hand, he held a sleek black handgun fitted with a suppressor, held casually at his side.

"You brought the case," the man noted, his eyes scanning the empty parking lot behind my truck.

"It's all here," I said, stopping ten feet from the dock. "The cash, the drive, and Elena's notebook. Now tell me who gave Patricia the authorization to target my daughter."

The man chuckled, taking two steps down the concrete ramp toward me. "Patricia was ambitious. She realized your late wife had kept meticulous records of every payment we processed. When Elena died, Patricia offered to recover the ledger in exchange for half your estate. We didn't care about your house, Gabriel. We only wanted the records destroyed so federal auditors couldn't trace the money back to Hector Vance."

"So Patricia acted with your approval," I said, keeping my voice loud and clear for the microphone wire.

"Of course," the man sneered, raising the gun slightly. "And now that you've delivered the evidence right to my hands, there won't be any loose ends left to testify in court."

"You're right about one thing," I said, taking a step backward into the darkness. "There won't be any loose ends."

Before he could raise his weapon, bright tactical floodlights erupted from three surrounding shipping containers, blinding the man in a wall of brilliant white light.

"State Police! Drop the weapon! Hands on your head! Do it now!"

Heavy boots thundered across the gravel as eight armed tactical officers swarmed the loading dock. The man dropped his gun instantly, falling to his knees as officers tackled him to the ground and clicked steel cuffs around his wrists.

Prosecutor Gomez stepped out from behind a police cruiser, walking up to me with a look of immense satisfaction.

"We got him, Mr. Torres," Gomez said, tapping her earpiece. "His name is Samuel Vance—Hector Vance's youngest brother. And his admission on your recording just handed us the entire syndicate leadership on a silver platter."

I picked up the black plastic case from the concrete dock, holding it close to my chest.

For the first time in four long years, the shadows of the past were completely gone.
