Chapter 5 - The ArrivalAt five-fifteen PM, the sound of a heavy engine echoed down the quiet suburban street.

A sleek silver shuttle van pulled up to the front curb of our house. Through the tinted windows, I could see four figures sitting inside—Patricia, her mother, her sister, and sixteen-year-old Bianca, all wearing bright tropical dresses and sunglasses, laughing as the driver opened his door to help with their luggage.
I stood on the front porch with my arms crossed over my chest. Beside me stood Roberto Mendez, holding the official court order, while the two uniformed police officers remained standing just inside the open front door, out of sight.
Patricia stepped out of the shuttle van first, clutching a designer shopping bag. She looked relaxed, sun-kissed, and thoroughly pleased with herself.
"Bianca, take the small bags inside first," Patricia called out in her loud, commanding voice as she walked up the paved driveway toward the iron front gate. "I want to take a long bath before Gabriel calls tonight from his route."
She reached into her purse, pulled out her heavy set of house keys, and inserted the main key into the front gate lock.
She turned it to the right. It didn't budge.
She frowned, pulled the key out, checked it, and inserted it again. She rattled the iron handle violently.
"What is wrong with this stupid lock?" she muttered angrily. "Gabriel must have forgotten to oil the latch again."
"Try the side key, Aunt Patricia," Bianca said, trailing behind her with two large rolling suitcases. "Or just yell for Sofia to come open it. She better have finished my laundry or I'm throwing her stuff in the yard."
Patricia rattled the gate again, then raised her hand to pound against the metal bars. "Sofia! Sofia, get out here right now and open this gate! You know you're not supposed to keep the main latch thrown!"
I stepped down from the porch and walked slowly down the paved walkway toward the gate, stopping three feet away on the inside of the fence.
Sofia stepped down beside me, her eyes calm, her hands resting quietly in her pockets.
Patricia froze. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she saw me standing there in my dark work shirt, looking at her through the iron bars.
"Gabriel?" Patricia stammered, her voice instantly dropping two octaves as she tried to force a warm, surprised smile onto her face. "What... what are you doing home? You said your route to Monterrey was supposed to last until Tuesday!"
I didn't smile. I didn't answer her question.
"Your key doesn't work, Patricia," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "Because the locks were changed four hours ago."
Patricia’s smile vanished completely, replaced by a sudden, sharp flicker of irritation. "What are you talking about? Why would you change the locks while we were on vacation? Open this gate right now! We're exhausted, our luggage is in the street, and Bianca needs to get inside!"
"You're not coming inside, Patricia," I replied.
Beside her, Bianca stepped forward, her face scowling. "Uncle Gabriel, stop playing around! Sofia didn't do her chores while we were gone, and now you're locking us out?"
Sofia took one step closer to the iron bars, looking directly into Bianca’s eyes.
"I finished the laundry, Bianca," Sofia said softly. "All of your clothes are packed into trash bags. They're waiting for you in the garage."
Patricia’s face turned bright red with rage. She slammed her hand against the gate bars. "Gabriel! Have you lost your mind? What lies has this ungrateful girl been telling you while we were away? I demand you open this gate immediately!"
At that moment, Roberto Mendez stepped down the walkway, holding up the bright yellow legal folder. Beside him, the two uniformed police officers stepped out from the porch and walked into full view of the front gate.
Patricia’s breath hitched in her throat as her eyes caught the gleaming silver badges of the officers.
"Patricia Morales," Roberto said in a loud, official tone that echoed down the quiet street. "My name is Roberto Mendez, legal counsel for Gabriel and Sofia Torres. I am serving you with an emergency ex parte order of protection issued by the First Family Court of León."
Patricia backed away from the gate by half a step, her face draining of all color. "A... a protective order?"
"You, your sister, and your niece are legally prohibited from entering these premises or coming within five hundred meters of Gabriel or Sofia Torres," Roberto continued, handing a copy of the legal notice through the iron bars directly to her sister, who snatched it with trembling fingers. "All your personal belongings have been packed and placed in the garage. Officers will supervise you taking your bags now. You have twenty minutes before you are in violation of a court mandate."
"This is ridiculous!" Patricia screamed, her voice cracking as she turned to the police officers. "Officer! This is my house! I am his wife! He can't just throw me out on the street!"
The lead officer stepped up to the gate, his hand resting calmly on his belt. "Ma'am, the house deed is registered solely to Mr. Torres. Furthermore, there is an active criminal investigation into allegations of child abuse, extortion, and document forgery filed against you. I strongly suggest you take your bags and leave peacefully."
Patricia whipped her head around to look at me through the bars, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated venom. The loving, attentive stepmother mask was completely gone, revealing the cold, predatory woman who had spent months torturing my daughter.
"You think you can get away with this, Gabriel?" she hissed, leaning close to the iron bars. "You think a small-town lawyer and a couple of local cops can stop me? I know every debt you owe! I know every route you drive! You won't have a life left by the time I'm done with you!"
I looked at her without a single trace of fear.
"You're wrong, Patricia," I said softly, reaching out to place my hand on Sofia’s shoulder. "My life is standing right next to me. And you're never touching it again."
