Chapter 2 - The New Owners

Elena returned from her expensive morning pilates class at exactly noon, holding a highly overpriced iced latte.

She strutted up the driveway, completely unaware that her entire fake kingdom had already crumbled.

She casually punched the code into the digital lock Nathan had installed on the front door.

The lock beeped an angry red error tone, refusing to open.

She sighed in extreme annoyance, assuming the batteries had simply died again.

She reached into her designer handbag to pull out her physical backup key.

Before she could even slide it into the keyhole, the heavy oak door swung wide open.

Standing in the doorway was not her battered mother-in-law, but a massive man in a neon yellow construction vest.

He stared down at Elena's shocked, pale face with absolutely zero emotion.

"Can I help you, lady?" the burly construction foreman barked, crossing his thick arms.

Elena gasped, her iced coffee slipping from her manicured fingers and splashing all over the porch.

"Who the hell are you, and what are you doing in my house?" she shrieked hysterically.

The foreman let out a deep, booming laugh that echoed into the quiet suburban street.

"Your house?" he repeated, pulling a clipboard from his toolbelt.

"My company bought this property two hours ago, and we are prepping it for total demolition."

Elena's jaw dropped so hard she could barely formulate a coherent sentence.

"That is totally impossible, my husband owns this property!" she screamed, trying to push past him.

The massive man easily blocked the doorway, his friendly demeanor vanishing instantly.

"Lady, I suggest you step back off this porch before I have you arrested for trespassing," he warned her coldly.

Behind him, Elena could see four other workers literally ripping Nathan's precious modern art off the living room walls.
