Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Nathan spent two agonizing days in the county jail before a judge finally granted him a public defender.
He used his one phone call to dial Elena's number, praying she would come bail him out.
The phone rang seven times before going straight to her generic, cold voicemail.
When Nathan was finally released on his own recognizance, he walked three miles back to the cheap motel.
He opened the door to room 114, expecting to find his angry wife waiting to yell at him again.
Instead, the room was completely empty, stripped bare of all her expensive designer clothes and bags.
The only thing left was Nathan's single garbage bag of dirty laundry and a piece of motel stationery on the nightstand.
Nathan picked up the note with trembling, bruised fingers, his heart sinking into his stomach.
"Nathan, I didn't marry a broke, homeless criminal who lives in a roach motel."
"My ex-boyfriend offered to let me stay at his penthouse while I file the divorce papers."
"Do not try to contact me, you have absolutely nothing left to offer a woman like me."
Nathan crushed the cruel note in his fist, letting out a loud, agonizing scream that echoed off the thin walls.
His own toxic, selfish behavior had attracted a woman who was just as vile as he was.
And the second his stolen money dried up, she discarded him like a piece of worthless trash.
He fell onto the bare mattress, burying his face in his hands and crying for the first time since he was a child.
He had traded a mother who loved him unconditionally for a fake lifestyle and a gold-digging wife.

Now, the universe had aggressively balanced the scales, stripping him of everything he falsely claimed to own.
He was totally alone, deeply in debt, facing criminal charges, and completely broken.
