Chapter 9 - Facing The Music

Two months later, Nathan sat in the sterile, depressing waiting room of the local courthouse.
He looked completely unrecognizable from the arrogant, smug man he used to be.
He had lost fifteen pounds, his expensive suit was terribly wrinkled, and his eyes were hollow with deep exhaustion.
He was currently living out of his SUV, showering at public gyms whenever he could scrounge up a few dollars.
The bailiff called his name, and Nathan shuffled into the crowded courtroom with his head hung low in intense shame.
He was facing serious charges for breaking and entering, trespassing, and resisting arrest.
The prosecutor was absolutely ruthless, painting Nathan as a desperate, violent man who refused to respect boundaries.
Nathan's overworked public defender barely put up a fight, knowing the security footage was completely undeniable.
When the judge asked if Nathan had anything to say before sentencing, the room went completely silent.
Nathan looked up at the judge, realizing that his massive ego was exactly what had destroyed his life.
"I ruined my own life, Your Honor," Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with genuine, painful regret.
"I treated the only person who cared about me terribly, and I deserve everything that has happened to me."
The judge nodded slowly, entirely unswayed by the late, pathetic apology.
"Mr. Vance, your actions demonstrate a total lack of respect for the law and the property of others."
"I am sentencing you to ninety days in the county jail, followed by two years of strict probation."
The heavy wooden gavel slammed down loudly, sounding exactly like a coffin being nailed shut.
The bailiff stepped forward, slapping cold metal handcuffs onto Nathan's wrists for the entire courtroom to see.

As he was led away to serve his sentence, he finally understood the true weight of his mother's silence.
She hadn't just kicked him out; she had systematically allowed his own terrible character to completely destroy him.
