Chapter 4 - The Humiliating Reality

Nathan's tires squealed as he pulled his heavy SUV into the driveway of the property.
The sight that greeted him made him feel like he had been punched violently in the gut.
A massive commercial dumpster was already parked on the front lawn, crushing his expensive landscaping.
Workers were tossing Elena's designer clothes and his custom golf clubs into heavy black garbage bags on the sidewalk.
Elena was sitting on the curb, weeping hysterically into her hands like a spoiled child.
Nathan jumped out of his truck, his face turning an angry shade of purple.
"Hey! Get your filthy hands off my property right now!" Nathan roared, charging toward the foreman.
The foreman didn't even flinch, calmly pulling a folded legal document from his heavy jacket pocket.
"Are you Nathan?" the worker asked, looking entirely bored by the dramatic display.
"Yes, I am the owner of this house, and I am calling the police!" Nathan screamed in his face.
"I already called them, buddy, because your crazy wife wouldn't stop trying to break the windows," the foreman replied smoothly.
Right on cue, two local police cruisers turned the corner, their sirens blaring loudly.
Nathan ran toward the officers, expecting them to immediately arrest the construction crew.
"Officer, these men have broken into my home and are destroying my things!" Nathan yelled frantically.
The older police officer calmly took the legal paperwork from the foreman and reviewed it carefully.
He looked back up at Nathan with a totally unimpressed, pitiful expression.
"Sir, according to this legally binding contract, this property was sold at 10:00 AM this morning," the officer stated clearly.
"That's illegal, my mother doesn't have the right to sell it out from under me!" Nathan argued, spit flying from his lips.

"Actually, sir, the deed was solely in her name, which means she can do whatever she pleases," the officer corrected him firmly.
"Now, you have exactly ten minutes to gather these trash bags and vacate the premises, or I will arrest you both for trespassing."
