Chapter 6 - The Hunt For A Ghost

The next morning, Nathan woke up with a massive headache and a singular, obsessive goal.

He needed to find his mother and force her to reverse the sale or give him the profits.

He left Elena sleeping on the terrible mattress and drove straight to his mother's longtime lawyer's office.

He stormed into the fancy reception area, demanding to speak to Mr. Sterling immediately.

The receptionist looked incredibly frightened and quickly pressed a silent security button under her desk.

Mr. Sterling emerged from his office, his face set in a stern, unforgiving glare.

"Where is she hiding, Sterling?" Nathan demanded, stepping aggressively toward the older man.

"Your mother is no longer a resident of this state, Nathan," the lawyer replied with icy professionalism.

"She left specific legal instructions that if you attempt to contact her, I am to file an immediate restraining order."

Nathan laughed, a desperate, completely unhinged sound that made the receptionist flinch.

"You can't keep a son away from his own mother, I have rights!" Nathan shouted loudly.

"You lost your rights as a son the moment you assaulted a senior citizen in her own kitchen," Sterling countered flawlessly.

Nathan froze completely, the color draining instantly from his face as he realized his mother had documented everything.

"She took photographs of the bruise, Nathan, and she forwarded them directly to my secure legal files," Sterling explained coldly.

"If you ever try to look for her again, I will hand those photos directly to the district attorney and press felony assault charges."

Nathan stumbled backward, feeling like the floor had suddenly dropped out from beneath him.

He had no leverage, no money, no home, and now, he had a massive legal threat hanging over his head.

"Security will escort you out now, Mr. Vance," the lawyer said, turning his back on the ruined man.

Nathan was physically shoved out the glass doors onto the cold concrete sidewalk, completely utterly defeated.
