Chapter 10 - The SigningOn Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., the main conference room at Pendelton, Vance & Associates was dead quiet.

I sat at the head of the polished glass table, dressed in a sleek navy suit, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and two senior corporate partners.

Opposite us sat Trent and his lawyer, Gary Rosen.

Trent looked like a ghost of the man I had married. His eyes were sunken, his hands were trembling visibly, and he couldn't bring himself to look me in the eye. Beside him, Gary Rosen looked equally defeated, holding a thick red pen over the legal documents spread across the table.

Gloria and Walt sat in the corner chairs of the conference room, looking pale, fragile, and utterly terrified. Gloria was no longer sending arrogant text messages about "Monday deposits"; she sat in silent, trembling terror, clutching her husband's hand as Arthur's paralegals organized the evidence binders.

Arthur pulled out the master settlement agreement and slid it across the glass table toward Trent.

"Let us review the terms one final time," Arthur said, his voice echoing with absolute authority.

"One: Trent Lawson agrees to an immediate, unconditional dissolution of marriage, waiving all claims to spousal support, marital property, equity, and retirement accounts held by Harper Lawson or Lawson Enterprise Solutions LLC."

Trent swallowed hard, his throat dry.

"Two," Arthur continued smoothly. "G&W Luxury Living LLC will immediately execute a complete deed transfer of all three residential rental properties in Mesa and Chandler to Lawson Enterprise Solutions LLC as full restitution for embezzled commercial capital."

Gloria let out a soft, choked sob in the corner, but Walt quickly squeezed her arm, shaking his head to keep her quiet.

"Three," Arthur concluded, laying his gold fountain pen beside the documents. "In exchange for full execution of these terms and total cooperation in liquidating the fraudulent assets, Harper Lawson agrees to execute a conditional covenant not to prosecute regarding the digital token forgery and civil wire fraud charges."

Arthur looked at Gary Rosen. "Do your clients understand the terms?"

Gary cleared his throat nervously. "Yes. We understand."

Gary turned to Trent, pushing the pen into his shaking hand. "Sign it, Trent. Sign every page."

Trent picked up the pen. His hand shook so violently that the black ink smeared across the first signature line, but he forced himself to sign page after page after page.

He signed away the house he had bragged about keeping. He signed away the Mercedes he had wanted for his mistress. He signed away his parents' stolen real estate portfolio. He signed away his financial future.

When he reached the final page, he dropped the pen onto the glass table, burying his face in his trembling hands, sobbing silently.

Arthur picked up the signed documents, inspected every signature with clinical precision, and nodded to me.

"Everything is in order, Harper," Arthur said smoothly.

I stood up from my chair, smoothing the front of my blazer. I didn't look at Gloria. I didn't look at Walt. I walked around the table and stopped directly beside Trent's chair.

He raised his red, tear-streaked eyes to look up at me one last time.

May you like

"I hope Brooke was worth it, Trent," I said quietly, my voice ringing with cool, absolute finality.

Without waiting for a response, I turned on my heel and walked out of the conference room into the bright, sunlit hallway, leaving the ghosts of my past behind me forever.
