Chapter 6 - The Fall from Paradise

The sun beat down relentlessly on the black asphalt of Paradise Valley.

Trent stood on the curb with two bulging black trash bags slumped over his expensive Italian shoes, watching the heavy iron gates of the estate lock shut with a final, hydraulic thud. Beside him, Brooke was sobbing openly, her makeup streaked down her face, clutching her cheap canvas bag like a lifeline.

"Trent... what do we do now?" Brooke whimpered, wiping her nose with the back of her sleeve. "The Uber is going to take fifteen minutes, and my feet hurt! Where are we supposed to go?"

"Shut up for one second, Brooke!" Trent snapped, his voice shrill with panicked rage. He pulled out his phone with a trembling hand and dialed his mother again.

"Mom! Pick up!" he yelled as soon as the line connected.

"Trent?!" Gloria’s voice came through the speaker, hysterical and breathless. "Where are you? What is happening? The bank representative called five minutes ago and said a temporary restraining order has been placed on our personal checking account too! They froze my grocery money!"

"Harper took the house, Mom!" Trent shouted, pacing back and forth on the sidewalk. "She brought armed security guards and a tow truck! She repossessed the Mercedes, changed the locks, and threw us out on the street!"

A sharp, audible gasp echoed from Gloria’s end of the line. "She what?! That ungrateful, vicious monster! After everything we did for her?! After how welcoming we were when you brought her into our family?!"

"Mom, we need a place to stay," Trent pleaded, his slick composure entirely shattered. "Brooke and I are coming to your house right now. We'll figure out a strategy from there."

"You can't come here!" Gloria shrieked.

Trent froze in his tracks. "What do you mean we can't come there?"

"There are two process servers parked right outside our driveway!" Gloria hissed in a frantic whisper. "Your father is hiding behind the living room curtains! They handed us a federal subpoena for tax fraud and civil racketeering! If you come here, they'll serve you too!"

"I don't care about a piece of paper, Mom!" Trent yelled, his face turning purple. "We have nowhere else to go! Brooke is pregnant!"

"Take her to a hotel!" Gloria snapped defensively. "Use your credit card!"

"My credit card is tied to Harper's corporate account!" Trent screamed into the phone. "She canceled it three hours ago! It got declined when I tried to buy champagne at twelve o'clock!"

The line went dead. Gloria had hung up on him.

Trent stood staring at his phone in absolute, paralyzed shock. The golden pedestal he had built for himself—funded entirely by my labor, my company, and my blind trust—had collapsed into dust in less than four hours.

A rusted, mid-sized sedan pulled up to the curb five minutes later. The Uber driver rolled down the window, looking dubiously at the two trash bags and the weeping woman on the sidewalk.

"Trent Lawson?" the driver asked.

Trent swallowed his pride, gritted his teeth, and hauled his garbage bags into the trunk of a fourteen-year-old vehicle, stepping into the back seat of a reality he had spent five years trying to escape.
