Chapter 10 - The Sovereign SkyOctober 2028

The golden autumn afternoon sun painted the waters of Puget Sound in brilliant ribbons of amber, rose, and deep indigo.

On the completed wide wooden porch of our Olympia home, three long tables were set under warm hanging string lights for a quiet family dinner.

It was Maya and Nora’s second birthday.

Thirty close friends, former members of Calvin’s battalion, and neighbors gathered around the tables, laughing and enjoying a Northwest salmon dinner. The air was filled with warm conversation, the clinking of glasses, and the sweet smell of baking apple pie.

Maya and Nora sat in their high chairs at the head of the table, wearing matching floral dresses, their faces covered in chocolate frosting as they giggled at their father.

I stood near the edge of the porch, holding a warm cup of cider, watching my family.

Calvin walked over, stepping softly across the wooden deck, wrapping his strong arms around my waist from behind and resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

"Happy, Clara?" Calvin whispered into my hair.

I leaned back against his chest, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beating against my back—a heart that had fought through dark oceans, corporate lies, and federal battles just to hold me here in the light.

"I’m completely whole, Calvin," I answered softly, reaching up to rest my hand over his.

Overhead, the first evening stars began to appear in the deep Pacific sky, bright, clear, and everlasting above the quiet waters of the sound.

The airport gate was a distant memory. The glass house was turned to dust. The conspirators were locked tight behind federal prison bars.

And here on the porch, surrounded by the warmth of genuine love, true family, and an unbreakable future, the light shone bright, steady, and forever whole.
