Chapter 18 - The Fortress WallTwo weeks after the awards ceremony, Calvin, Miller, and I drove out to a ten-acre property in the rolling, forested hills near Puget Sound, overlooking the clear waters of the bay.

Six months prior, Calvin and I had purchased the plot of land—a quiet, pine-forested hilltop with a panoramic view of the Pacific sky.

A team of local carpenters and stone masons was currently laying the foundation for a broad, single-story craftsman home built from native stone and heavy cedar timber.

We walked along the framed wooden perimeter of what would become the wide front porch. The air smelled of damp earth, fresh cedar shavings, and sweet spring pine.

"It’s going to be beautiful, Calvin," I said, wrapping my wool coat around my shoulders as the afternoon breeze blew off the water.

Calvin stepped up beside me, leaning his arm against a heavy vertical pine beam.

"I built a lot of temporary structures during my years on active duty, Clara," Calvin said, looking out over the water. "Outposts, forward bases, tactical positions. Things designed to withstand an attack and be torn down when the mission was over."

He turned his head to look at me, his dark eyes filled with a soft, steady warmth.

"This house isn't an outpost," Calvin whispered softly. "This is a home. It's built on solid rock, with three-inch solid oak doors and double-reinforced concrete foundations. It's a place where Maya, Nora, you, and any future generations can sit on the porch and know that nothing in this world can touch them."

I reached out, resting my hand against his arm, feeling the steady strength of the man who had fought through corporate shadow and military exile to bring us into the light.

"You already built that fortress, Calvin," I said gently. "You built it the moment you broke away from your mother's empire for us."

A faint, genuine smile touched his lips. "Then this is just where we put the chairs."
