Chapter 7 - The ExtractionCalvin stood in the doorway.

He was pale, his face gaunt, wearing a gray military physical training sweater and dark trousers. He had a white medical bandage taped over his right forearm where an IV line had been forcibly ripped out. He was leaning heavily against the shoulder of a towering, armed Ranger, but his dark eyes were bright, fierce, and burning with an absolute, unyielding intensity.

"Calvin!" I gasped, my heart leaping into my throat.

He looked across the room, his eyes instantly finding mine, then dropping to the fleece-covered carrier strapped against my chest. A ragged, choking breath escaped his lips.

"Clara..." he rasped, his voice rough and dry from sedation.

He pushed himself away from the Ranger, staggering two steps forward into the room under his own power, his jaw set like iron.

Evelyn spun around, her composure finally shattering into jagged pieces. "Calvin! What are you doing out of bed?! You are sick! You need medical attention!"

"Shut up, Mother," Calvin said.

The words were not shouted. They were delivered with a cold, flat finality that hit the room like a physical blow.

Evelyn recoiled as if she had been slapped. "Calvin! I am your mother! I built this company for you! I protected Thomas’s legacy for you!"

"You didn't protect Thomas," Calvin said, his voice shaking with deep, suppressed rage as he stepped closer, forcing the two corporate attorneys to hastily pack their bags and back away toward the patio doors. "You buried his wife. You sold his daughter to a pair of paid guardians. And then you tried to use me to finish the fraud."

He reached out, his long, scarred hand finding mine, his fingers locking securely around my cold knuckles. The warmth of his grip shot through my arm, grounding me completely.

"It’s over, Mother," Calvin whispered.

From the courtyard outside, the sudden, heavy thrumming of low-rotor blades vibrated through the floorboards. The sea fog outside the glass walls was violently torn apart by the downwash of a massive twin-engine aircraft descending over the lawn.

Blinding searchlights painted the interior of the living room in brilliant white light.

Through the glass, two dark blue Sikorsky helicopters bearing the gold emblem of the FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION hovered twenty feet above the helipad, their side doors swinging open as tactical agents in navy jackets began fast-roping onto the manicured grass.

Special Agent Marcus Vance—the federal investigator Miller had alerted four hours ago—stepped through the shattered patio doors, flanked by four armed federal marshals.

Agent Vance pulled an official white folder from his coat pocket, stepping into the center of the room.

"Evelyn Vance!" Agent Vance announced, his voice easily cutting through the thunder of the helicopter engines outside. "By order of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington, I have a warrant for your immediate arrest!"

Evelyn stood frozen in the center of her grand living room, her crystal glass slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor.

"On what grounds?!" she shrieked, her voice high, thin, and hysterical. "I am the Executive Chair of Vance Maritime! You cannot touch me in this house!"

"Charges include federal wire fraud, military procurement obstruction, identity forgery, and the unlawful detention of an active-duty officer," Agent Vance stated coolly, stepping aside as two female marshals produced heavy steel handcuffs. "Take her into custody."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Evelyn’s manicured wrists, she twisted her head around, her eyes wide with wild, desperate fury as she looked at Calvin and me.

"Calvin!" she screamed as she was escorted toward the patio. "You are a Vance! You are destroying your own family! Without me, you are nothing! The company will collapse!"

Calvin didn't look back. He pulled me tighter against his side, his arm wrapping around my shoulder, protecting me and our two daughters from the wind rushing through the broken glass.

"The company was built on a ghost, Mother," Calvin said quietly into the storm. "And the ghost just came home."
