Chapter 15 - The Unshakable FoundationMarch 2031

The morning sun broke through the coastal fog over Olympia, painting the waters of Puget Sound in shimmering ribbons of silver and pale gold.

On the wide wooden porch of our craftsman home, four-year-old Maya and Nora were busy building a massive timber fortress out of cedar blocks, laughing as their wooden figures guarded the high tower.

I sat in a rocking chair holding a warm mug of Earl Grey tea, watching my daughters play in the crisp morning air.

Calvin walked out through the french doors, wearing a soft flannel shirt, carrying two warm plates of blueberry pancakes. He set them on the porch table, then walked over to stand behind my chair, wrapping his arms around my neck and resting his cheek against mine.

"What are you thinking about, Clara?" he murmured softly.

I looked out at the wide, calm expanse of the sound—at the tall Douglas firs standing strong against the blue sky, at the wooden fortress on the porch floor, and at the man whose love had built a sanctuary out of the ruins of a dark empire.

"I was thinking about the airport gate," I said quietly, turning my head to kiss his cheek. "And how far we walked to get here."

Calvin smiled, his dark eyes warm, clear, and radiant with absolute, unbroken peace.

"We're home, Clara," Calvin whispered, locking his fingers tightly with mine. "And nobody is ever taking this away."

Overhead, the sky stretched wide, clear, and endless above the quiet water, holding our family in a light that was bright, steady, and forever whole.
