Chapter 17 - The Sanctuary's FoundationIn early April, the Glenwood Post-partum Sanctuary officially held its dedication ceremony in downtown Chicago.

The building—a beautifully restored four-story limestone structure featuring warm wood paneling, private residential suites, a state-of-the-art medical nursery, and a dedicated legal advocacy clinic—stood as a living testament to the victory I had forged out of my own darkest night.
Over two hundred guests attended the ribbon-cutting event, including hospital administrators, local judges, state advocates, and several young mothers who had already utilized the sanctuary's emergency intake services.
My father, Arthur Vance Jr., stood near the back of the foyer, looking healthier, calmer, and genuinely proud. He wore a simple dark suit, holding three-year-old Emma on his hip while she giggled, holding a small red ribbon cutting pair of child-safe scissors.
When the Director of Maternal Health at County General introduced me at the podium, the room fell dead silent.
"Four years ago," I spoke into the microphone, my voice clear, steady, and carrying across the sunlit hall, "I sat on the floor of my own home ten days after giving birth, bleeding, exhausted, and covered in ice water while the people who were supposed to protect me told me I was dramatic."
A collective, quiet gasp rippled through the audience.
"In that moment," I continued, "I was forced to learn a lesson that no mother should ever have to discover alone: that power is not something given to you by a husband, a family name, or a marriage certificate. Power is what you claim when you realize that your child's safety is worth tearing down every lie built around you."
I looked out at the sea of supportive faces—at my daughter smiling in her grandfather's arms, at Marcus Vance standing near the entrance, at Sarah Vance nodding with quiet pride.

"This sanctuary exists so that no woman in this city will ever have to wonder if she has a place to run," I declared. "The doors are unlocked. The heat is on. And the light will never go out."
The thunderous applause that followed echoed off the limestone walls, filling the hall with a warmth that no cold wind could ever extinguish.
