Chapter 6 - The Sister in the ShadowsThe silver-framed photograph felt heavy and cold in my hand.

I stood in the humid, concrete-scented air behind the furnace room, staring at the image under the harsh LED strip light. Victoria, my father's daughter from his second marriage—the girl who had spent her entire adolescence competing with me for our father's attention—was smiling into the Mexican sun, her arm wrapped around my husband’s waist.

The timeline burned into my brain like acid. Eight months ago. I was twenty-two weeks pregnant, confined to strict bedrest with hyperemesis gravidarum, struggling to keep down fluids while Ryan told me he was on a "mandatory regional sales conference" in San Diego.

"Claire?" Marcus’s voice broke through the ringing in my ears. He stepped closer, his sharp eyes taking in the photograph and the small glass vial sitting on the safe's velvet shelf. "Do you know who that is?"

"It's my half-sister," I whispered, my voice completely devoid of inflection. "Victoria."

Marcus didn't react with shock; his face simply hardened into an expression of lethal, calculated resolve. He pulled a pair of nitrile gloves from his suit pocket, slipped them on, and carefully picked up the small glass vial containing the clear liquid.

"Don't touch that, Claire," Marcus said softly, sliding the vial into a clear plastic evidence bag. "Hank, call Captain Reed at the state police task force. Tell him we need a forensic hazmat technician at 1420 Glenwood Lane immediately."

I looked down at the thick stack of printed emails lying beneath the photograph. I picked them up with my left hand, flipping through the pages.

The emails were dated from June to September.

Ryan hadn't just been planning an affair. He and Victoria had been coordinating with a disgraced medical practitioner in Chicago to obtain prescription-grade sedatives—substances designed to induce severe mood swings, memory loss, and lethargy when added to daily liquid intake.

The strategy laid out by Ryan’s attorney was explicit: Document a continuous history of post-partum psychosis, emotional instability, and physical neglect of the infant. Once established, petition the court for emergency civil commitment and temporary guardianship of the trust's administrative voting shares.

The ice water Linda had poured over my head two hours ago wasn't just a cruel whim. It was part of a months-long campaign to break my mind, ruin my health, and paint me as an unhinged mother before a family court judge.

I folded the emails, tucked them into my cardigan pocket, and looked at Marcus.

"Where is Victoria right now?" I asked.

"According to trust property logs," Marcus revealed, checking his tablet, "she signed a short-term lease on a high-rise condo downtown three weeks ago—a building owned by Vance Real Estate Management."

A slow, cold smile touched my lips. "Cancel her lease, Marcus. Tonight."
