Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the TowerAt two o'clock that afternoon, a black town car deposited Marcus, Sarah, and me outside the glass-and-steel lobby of the Vance Grand Tower on Michigan Avenue.

The forty-second floor housed the luxury penthouse suite Victoria had been occupying for twenty-one days—a five-thousand-dollar-a-month residence funded by a credit line Ryan had fraudulently established using my social security number.

We didn't knock.

Marcus used the master administrator key card to disengage the private elevator lock, and the heavy brass doors slid open directly into the sunlit, marble-floored foyer of the apartment.

Inside, the suite was scattered with luxury shopping bags—Gucci, Prada, Saks Fifth Avenue—and half-empty champagne glasses on the quartz kitchen island.

Victoria stepped out of the master bedroom wearing a silk bathrobe, holding a coffee cup. When she saw me standing in the foyer flanked by Marcus Vance and two uniformed private security officers, she froze, her cup stopping mid-air.

"Claire?" Victoria stammered, her voice tightening with immediate defensive panic. "What... what are you doing here?! How did you get in here?!"

"This is my building, Victoria," I said, stepping onto the polished white floor, my tone icy and precise. "Every brick, every glass panel, and every lock in this tower belongs to the Vance Trust."

Victoria recovered her composure quickly, tossing her hair back with a condescending sneer. "If you're here about Ryan, you're too late. He doesn't love you, Claire. He never did. He was using you for your money from the day you met."

"I know," I replied smoothly. "And now he’s sitting in a federal holding cell without bail, facing twenty-five years in federal prison."

Victoria’s sneer evaporated instantly. "What... what are you talking about?"

Sarah Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick legal document from her leather portfolio.

"Miss Vance," Sarah stated, her voice as sharp as a razor. "You are being formally served with an emergency eviction notice, a civil suit for Fraudulent Conversion and Conspiracy, and a non-negotiable asset freeze order issued by the Cook County Circuit Court."

Victoria’s face went white as paper. "Asset freeze?! You can't freeze my accounts!"

"Every credit line, every bank account, and every luxury purchase you made using funds derived from Miller & Associated Management has been seized by the federal receiver," Sarah explained flatly. "Building security is currently outside the door. You have ten minutes to gather your personal clothing and vacate these premises."

"You can't do this to me!" Victoria shrieked, taking a step toward me, her eyes wild. "Our father won't allow this! I will call him right now!"

May you like

I looked at my half-sister with a mixture of cold satisfaction and quiet pity.

"Call him, Victoria," I said softly. "Ask him if he has two million dollars to pay your legal fees. Because by sunset today, every lease, trust allowance, and family stipend assigned to you by the estate is officially revoked."
