Chapter 7 - The Federal ArraignmentAt nine o'clock the following morning, the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago was quiet, sterile, and bathed in gray autumn light filtering through soaring glass windows.

I sat in the front row of Courtroom 4B, wearing a dark navy wool suit, my hair pulled back into a neat knot. Beside me sat Marcus Vance and Sarah Vance, the senior managing partner of Vance Legal Advocates.
In my arms, wrapped in a pink fleece blanket, six-day-old Emma slept peacefully against my chest. My body still throbbed with deep physical fatigue, but my spine was straight, rigid, and unyielding.
The heavy oak doors at the side of the courtroom opened with a dull thud.
Two armed U.S. Marshals escorted Ryan and Linda into the room.
They wore orange county jumpsuit overalls, their wrists and ankles bound in heavy steel chains that clinked loudly with every step. Ryan’s hair was wild, unwashed, his face pale and sunken. His eyes darted frantically around the gallery until they landed on me.
He faltered, his knees buckling slightly, but a marshal gripped his elbow, forcing him forward to the defense table.
Linda looked even worse. Her manicured nails were chipped, her face stripped of makeup, her eyes red-rimmed from a night of screaming in a holding cell.
Behind them sat a public defender appointed by the court after Ryan’s private legal team withdrew their representation at 7:00 AM due to unpaid retainers and conflict of interest.
The magistrate judge, Honorable Arthur Thorne, took his seat on the bench, flipping through a thick red folder provided by the Assistant United States Attorney.
"Case 26-CR-0489," Judge Thorne announced, his deep voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "United States versus Ryan Miller and Linda Miller. Charges include Federal Wire Fraud, Aggravated Identity Theft, Bank Fraud, and Conspiracy to Defraud a Tax-Exempt Trust Entity."
The prosecutor stood up. "Your Honor, the government moves for permanent pre-trial detention without bail. The defendants attempted to transfer two million dollars in fraudulently obtained capital to a non-extradition offshore jurisdiction, represent a severe flight risk, and are under active state investigation for attempted chemical endangerment of a vulnerable post-partum mother and infant."
Ryan’s public defender stood up weakly. "Your Honor, my clients have no prior criminal record. Mr. Miller is a lifelong resident of this state—"
"Save it, Counsel," Judge Thorne cut in flatly. He looked over his glasses directly at Ryan and Linda. "The court has reviewed the forensic evidence recovered from 1420 Glenwood Lane, including intercepted offshore financial routing numbers and chemical analysis of seized controlled substances."
Judge Thorne slammed his wooden gavel down with a sharp, terrifying CRACK.
"Bail is denied. Both defendants will remain in federal custody at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial."
As the marshals turned Ryan around to lead him back toward the holding cell doors, he locked eyes with me across the wooden rail.

"Claire!" Ryan whimpered, tears spilling over his cheeks, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic pitch. "Claire, please! Talk to them! I was manipulated! It was Victoria! She made me do it!"
I sat in the front row, holding my daughter, and watched him get led away into the dark corridor without saying a single word.
