Chapter 3 - The Red LightsThe low, rhythmic wail of police sirens began to echo from two blocks away, rising in volume as the emergency vehicles navigated the suburban neighborhood.

Ryan didn't wait. He lunged for the door of his silver sedan, shoving his keys into the ignition.

"Ryan!" Linda screamed, running toward the car in her slippers, waving her arms. "Ryan! Don't leave me! Take me with you!"

Ryan slammed the driver's door shut, locked it, and threw the car into reverse. He didn't even look at his mother. The rear tires screeched violently against the wet asphalt, leaving dark rubber burn marks as he backed out of the driveway into the street.

Before he could shift into drive, two black-and-white state police cruisers rounded the corner, their red and blue emergency lights flashing blindingly against the wet trees.

The lead cruiser cut straight across the lane, blocking Ryan's sedan at an angle. The second cruiser pulled up behind him, sealing the escape path.

"DRIVER! STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE! PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!" a loud speaker boomed through the night air.

Three uniformed state troopers stepped out behind their open car doors, weapons unholstered, their tactical flashlights cutting through the darkness, pinning Ryan in their beams.

Inside his car, Ryan froze. Through the tinted glass, I could see his profile—his face pale, his mouth open, weeping hysterically as he raised his trembling hands above the steering wheel.

Beside the driveway, Linda collapsed onto her knees beside her hard-shell suitcases, sobbing into her hands as a female trooper approached her with handcuffs ready.

"Claire..." Marcus said gently, taking my arm to guide me back inside the warm foyer. "You shouldn't be standing out in the cold. Let the officers handle this."

I took one last look at the driveway.

Ryan was pushed flat against the hood of his sedan, the metal cuffs clicking loudly around his wrists as a trooper read him his Miranda rights. He turned his head toward the porch, his eyes wide with pathetic, desperate terror, mouthing the words: "I'm sorry! Claire, please!"

I pulled my wet blanket tighter around my shoulders, turned my back on him, and walked inside.

I shut the heavy oak door, locking the deadbolt with a firm, final CLICK.
