Chapter 14 - DIANE’S VERSION OF FAMILY
Diane refused cooperation.
She called Sabrina weak.
She called me vindictive.
She called North Coast predatory.
Her defense theory:
She genuinely believed Grace was developing behavioral problems.
She genuinely feared my grief after Ethan’s death made me unstable.
She genuinely believed family guardianship would benefit Grace.
Financial requests were legitimate proposals rejected through normal process.
The birthday incident was Sabrina’s excess.
That theory had problems.
Connor’s videos.
The planning recording.
The prewritten guardianship petition.
The edited clinical file.
The property LLC.
The inflated appraisal.
Emails about provoking me.
Still, parts of Diane’s concern had roots in reality.
I had struggled after Ethan died.
Insomnia.
Panic attacks.
One episode where I left work because I could not stop crying.
Grace became clingy.

“When did you first consider becoming Grace’s guardian?”
“After Ethan died.”
“Because Natalie was unsafe?”
“Because she was overwhelmed.”
“Did you report concerns then?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She improved.”
“Then why guardianship eighteen months later?”
“Her violence.”
“The petition was drafted before the birthday.”
Diane paused.
“Contingency.”
“Based on what?”
“Her volatility.”
The prosecutor displayed:
Make Natalie choose between protecting Grace and controlling herself.
Diane said:
“I meant expose what was already there.”
“By holding a child down while cutting her hair?”
“I did not know Natalie would attack Sabrina.”
“You hoped she would lose control.”
“I hoped the truth would become visible.”
That sentence became the whole case.
Diane believed provocation revealed truth.
The prosecution argued provocation created evidence.
The jury would decide criminal intent.
Financially, Diane claimed the Rosebridge house was genuinely suitable for Grace.
It was.
Large yard.
Good school district.
Extra bedrooms.
The inflated price remained.
She blamed Sabrina.
Sabrina testified Diane knew.
Texts supported Sabrina.
Diane:
North Coast will never approve at 2.6.
Sabrina:
Then what number?
Diane:
Enough to clear everything and still justify upgrades.
That was difficult to explain innocently.
