Chapter 22 - SABRINA COMES HOME

Sabrina completed custody later.
Supervised release.
No children-related businesses.
Her relationship with Bella and Connor rebuilt slowly.
Bella saw her first.
Connor waited another year.
Grace waited much longer.
Sabrina worked in inventory management for a furniture company.
No scissors.
No salons.
She joked about that once in therapy.
The therapist told her not to use humor until others invited it.
Good.
When Grace was sixteen, she asked to read Sabrina’s plea statement.
We let her.
She stopped at:
I wanted to hurt Natalie through Grace.
“That’s the worst part.”
“Yes.”
“Worse than money.”
“For me too.”
Grace asked:
“Did Aunt Sabrina love me?”
“I think she did in some ways.”
“That’s gross.”
“What?”
“People always say love like it makes things better.”
She was right to resist.
“Then forget the label. Her behavior was unsafe.”
“Better.”
At seventeen, Grace agreed to a supervised meeting.
Sabrina cried before Grace entered.
Grace did not.
Sabrina apologized.
Specific.
Dog bowl.
Laundry room.
Videos.
Hair.
Calling her spoiled.
Using jealousy.
Then:
“I made your fear useful to me.”
Grace asked:
“Why did you hate Mom?”
“I thought she had a life that never fell apart.”
Grace almost laughed.
“Dad died.”
Sabrina closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“You knew then.”
“Yes.”
“You were jealous anyway.”
“Yes.”
That contradiction mattered.
Pain does not prevent envy.
Envy does not become justified because the envied person also suffers.
Grace did not forgive her that day.
She agreed to another meeting the following year.
Relationship became distant.
Aunt.
Not mother figure.
May you like
Not enemy.
Something limited.
