Chapter 19 - CONNOR PUTS DOWN THE TABLET

Connor stopped recording people.
That sounds obvious.
It was not.
For months he activated video whenever adults argued.
At school.
At Mark’s house.
At therapy once.
Evidence had made him feel safe.
His therapist helped him build another rule.
If unsafe:
Leave.
Find adult.
Call help.
Record only if appropriate and not at risk.
No child should feel required to create admissible evidence before asking for protection.
One afternoon he came to our house for a supervised cousin visit.
Grace agreed.
Bella came too.
No Sabrina.
No Diane.
Connor left his tablet in Mark’s car.
I noticed.
Said nothing.
Grace and Bella colored.
Connor built a Lego car.
For twenty minutes, ordinary.
Then Grace asked Bella:
“Why did you hide Bunny?”
Bella froze.
The doll.
Her favorite.
Bella answered:
“Mom told me to make you cry for a video.”
“Why?”
“I thought grown-ups knew what they were doing.”
Grace considered.
“Did you know it was mean?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
Bella began crying.
“I was scared of Mom.”
Grace looked toward me.
I did not answer for her.
She turned back.
“I don’t want you hiding stuff again.”
“I won’t.”
“Okay.”
Not forgiveness speech.
Boundary.
They resumed coloring ten minutes later.
Connor watched.

No camera.
Healing sometimes looks offensively small.
