Chapter 15 - The Unbroken FoundationBy Friday morning, the dust had begun to settle over my estate.

The news of the grand embezzlement scandal broke across Chicago's financial media outlets. Headlines read: “Bennett Algorithmic Capital Uncovers $1.6M Internal Theft: CEO’s Husband and Family Facing Federal Fraud Charges.”
My firm's stock and reputation remained completely unbothered. In fact, our swift, uncompromising response to internal fraud earned praise from our major institutional investors for absolute operational integrity.
At 11:00 AM, my family law attorney, Eleanor Vance, arrived at my mansion carrying the final draft of the divorce petition.
We sat in the living room—the same living room where, less than a week ago, Nicole had demanded $30,000 for a yacht trip and Diane had slapped my face.
"Daniel’s attorney reached out an hour ago," Eleanor said, setting the papers on the oak table. "Given the mountain of criminal evidence against him, he is willing to sign a full, unconditional divorce settlement. He waives all claims to spousal support, division of property, and any share in your assets or firm."
"And the criminal civil suit?" I asked, taking a pen from my desk.
"He has agreed to transfer his remaining liquid assets toward full restitution of the one point six million dollars," Eleanor replied. "He and his mother are looking at five to seven years in federal prison. Nicole is facing three to five, pending a plea bargain."
I signed my name smoothly on the line: Lauren Bennett.
I set the pen down, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and looked out across the expansive green lawn of my estate. The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant autumn afternoon bathed in golden sunlight.
My cheek no longer burned. My home was quiet once again.

The mistake I made three years ago—confusing bloodlines with family, and generosity with weakness—was officially corrected.
I picked up my cup of warm tea, took a slow, peaceful sip, and looked out at the estate that was, and always would be, entirely my own.
