Chapter 17 - The Verdict and SentencesThe jury deliberated for less than three hours.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, the courtroom fell into a heavy, breathless hush as Judge Patricia Holbrook took her seat on the bench and received the verdict sheets from the jury foreman.
"On count one, Federal Wire Fraud, how do you find the defendant, Daniel Bennett?"
"Guilty," the foreman announced.
"On count two, Grand Larceny... Guilty. On count three, Corporate Embezzlement... Guilty."
One by one, the verdicts echoed through the silent courtroom. All three defendants were found guilty on every single felony count.
Nicole let out a soft, choked sob, dropping her forehead onto the wooden desk. Diane clutched her defense attorney's arm, her chest heaving as panic took over. Daniel simply stared ahead, tears silently running down his cheeks as the reality of his total destruction finally crashed down upon him.
Judge Holbrook adjusted her glasses, looking down at the three defendants with cold, judicial disgust.
"This court has reviewed the evidence of this case extensively," Judge Holbrook said, her voice booming across the courtroom. "What we have witnessed here is not a simple family tragedy. It is a calculated, shameless scheme driven by unbridled greed, entitlement, and an absolute lack of moral compass."
She turned her gaze toward Nicole first.
"Nicole Miller, for your active participation in wire fraud and grand theft, you are sentenced to four years in a state correctional facility, followed by three years of supervised probation."
"Diane Miller," the judge continued, turning her sharp gaze to my mother-in-law. "You orchestrated and directed the theft of nearly half a million dollars while living under the roof of the victim who fed and sheltered you. You further compounded your crimes with physical violence. You are sentenced to six years in state prison without the possibility of early parole."
Diane collapsed into her seat, crying out hysterically as court guards held her up.
Finally, Judge Holbrook looked at Daniel.
"Daniel Bennett, as a licensed professional and a corporate officer, you betrayed the trust of your spouse, falsified corporate documentation, and masterminded the siphoning of one point six million dollars. You are sentenced to eight years in federal prison, alongside a order of full financial restitution in the amount of one million, six hundred thousand dollars."
GAVEL STRIKE.
As the bailiffs stepped forward, snapping heavy chains around their waists and wrists to lead them away toward the holding cells, Daniel turned his head desperate toward the gallery. His eyes caught mine through the crowd.

He mouthed three words: "I'm sorry, Lauren."
I didn't answer. I didn't scowl. I simply watched as the heavy doors closed behind them, shutting the family out of my life forever.
