Chapter 1 - The Echo on the MarbleThe foyer of the Grand Oak Estate was built to awe, designed with soaring ceilings, vaulted arches, and a double staircase made of imported Italian marble. On a stormy Tuesday afternoon, the mansion was filled with Seattle’s elite—real estate moguls, high-society socialites, and investors who had gathered for the highly anticipated unveiling of the estate’s renovation.

At the center of attention stood Victoria Sterling, thirty-four, impeccably styled in a pristine white designer suit. Diamonds sparkled at her throat, matching the sharp, cold arrogance in her eyes. She was the fiancé of Richard Vance, the high-profile developer who had spent the last two years managing the lavish restoration of the property. To everyone in the room, Victoria was already the mistress of the grand house.
Then, the heavy double doors opened, letting in a gust of rain and a humble figure.
A woman in a faded teal uniform, typical of home healthcare aides or service workers, rolled her wheelchair through the grand entrance. She wore no makeup, her damp dark hair was pinned back neatly, and her lap was covered by a simple beige blanket. Slipping inside silently to escape the downpour, she looked entirely out of place amidst the champagne flutes and silk dresses.
Victoria’s eyes narrowed the moment she spotted her.
"Who let this woman in?" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the soft string quartet music. "This is an exclusive private preview."
The woman in the teal uniform halted near the center of the lobby, looking around quietly. "I am sorry for interrupting," she said, her voice raspy but calm. "I only stepped inside out of the heavy rain while waiting for—"
"I don't care why you're here," Victoria snapped, marching down the marble steps, her heels clicking like gunshots. "Look at your wet tires. Look at the mud you're dragging across my floors."
Before the woman could turn her chair around, Victoria grabbed the rubber handles with violent force, violently shoving the wheelchair away toward the doors.
The chair struck a slight ridge in the marble floor, tipping over violently.
The wheelchair crashed sideways across the marble floor. The sharp, metallic sound tore through the mansion lobby, echoing off the high ceilings.
The woman in the teal uniform hit the ground beside it with a sickening thud. Her purse spilled open, scattering a key ring, a worn wallet, and a small leather notebook. Her hand trembled against the cold stone as the polished floor reflected her humiliation back at her.

The guests gasped in unison.
Then, they did nothing. They stood in their expensive tuxedos and silk gowns, whispering behind their gloved hands, watching the scene unfold like theater.
