Chapter 5 - The Unseen AccountDiane dropped the papers onto the floor as if they were coated in poison. “This is insane! Lauren! LAUREN!” she shrieked, looking up toward the second-floor balcony.

I stood on the mid-landing of the staircase, resting one hand on the cold iron railing, looking down at them like a judge observing two convicts.

“You have eighteen minutes left,” I said quietly.

Nicole looked between me and the large, muscular men standing in her living room. The reality of the situation was finally penetrating her thick skull. The smug arrogance she had displayed yesterday was melting into sheer, unadulterated panic.

“Lauren, please!” Nicole cried out, her voice cracking. “My clothes! My bags! I can't pack everything in eighteen minutes!”

“Then I suggest you move quickly,” Arthur advised coldly, signaling two of his guards to follow her upstairs to ensure she didn't touch my personal belongings.

As Nicole turned to sprint up the stairs in tears, Arthur stepped closer to the foyer table, opening a second leather folder—one that was distinctly thicker than the first.

He looked up at me on the stairs, his expression shifting from routine professional distance to something far more serious.

“Mrs. Bennett,” Arthur said, his tone dropping an octave. “There is another issue you need to address immediately.”

I stopped halfway down the staircase. “What issue?”

Arthur placed the second folder on the custom oak table—the same table where Nicole had thrown her purse yesterday. He opened it, revealing dozens of printed banking spreadsheets marked with red highlighter.

“This morning, while executing the emergency asset lockdown and securing the digital infrastructure connected to this address,” Arthur explained, “our forensic accounting team detected a series of repeated, unauthorized wire transfers originating from a secondary commercial account tied to this property.”

The air in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees.

Nicole, who had been halfway up the stairs, stopped dead in her tracks. She turned around slowly, her face completely drained of color.

Diane went equally pale, her lips parting in silent terror. Neither of them looked confused. Neither of them asked what Arthur was talking about.

They looked terrified. They looked caught.

I walked down the remaining steps, my eyes locked on Arthur’s spreadsheet.

“How much?” I asked quietly.

“Over the last fourteen months,” Arthur read from the page, “a total of four hundred and eighty-two thousand dollars has been systematically siphoned out of your firm's operational buffer account.”

He looked up, pointing a gloved pen toward Nicole's phone resting on the counter.

“And thirty thousand dollars was scheduled to be auto-routed to an offshore merchant account in Miami at noon today.”

I turned my head very slowly and looked at my sister-in-law.

Suddenly, the frantic demand for $30,000 wasn't just a spoiled girl asking for a luxury vacation.
