Chapter 1 - The Outcast in the Crystal RoomThe dining hall of the Azure Grand Hotel was a sanctuary built strictly for wealth, privilege, and discretion. Towering crystal chandeliers hung from gilded ceilings, casting warm light across white linen tablecloths, polished silver, and glasses filled with vintage wine. The room hummed with hushed conversations, light chuckles, and the gentle clinking of porcelain.

No one noticed the girl at first.

She stood near the entrance, framed by the shadow of heavy velvet drapes. In a room filled with tailored suits and silk evening gowns, she looked like an apparition from another reality. She was no older than seven, barefoot, her small feet leaving faint smudges against the plush Persian rug. Her fingers clutched tightly at the frayed edge of a faded, torn dress, her skin pale and dusted with grime.

She took a hesitant step forward, trembling from cold or fear—or perhaps both.

At the center of the room, sitting alone at a wide corner table, was Arthur Montgomery. At sixty-two, Arthur was the patriarch of the Montgomery Real Estate Conglomerate, a man whose word could move stock markets and alter city skylines. He was immaculate in his bespoke navy tuxedo, cutting into his steak with calm, practiced precision.

Then he felt it.

That subtle shift in the air, a phantom presence that made the back of his neck prickle.

Arthur paused, setting his knife down softly on the edge of his plate, and looked up.

And there she was.

The little girl had navigated her way past the marble pillars, stopping right beside his table. Her dark eyes were wide and hollow, framed by tangled brown hair.

“I’m hungry,” the little girl said softly, her voice barely carrying over the quiet string quartet playing in the background. “Can I eat?”

The question carried no whine, no rehearsed dramatics of a seasoned street beggar. It was flat, quiet, and heavy—the tone of a child who had already run out of hope.

Before Arthur could speak, a sharp movement cut through the stillness.

A hotel security guard stepped in fast, his face red with embarrassment, his hand already reaching out toward the child’s slender shoulder.

“Hey! You need to leave right now,” the guard hissed under his breath, aiming to drag her away before the high-profile guests were disturbed.

At an adjacent table, a woman in a dazzling emerald dress recoiled, fanning herself with a manicured hand, her lips twisted in visible disgust. “This is repulsive,” she muttered loud enough for those nearby to hear. “Where is the management? Letting something like this walk in off the street.”

The child flinched, pulling her body inward, instinctively bracing for a blow or a harsh shove. But she didn't run. She stood her ground, her gaze locked squarely on Arthur, silently waiting.
