Chapter 11: The Shadow at the Gate

The court papers for Leo’s emergency custody hearing were finalized within forty-eight hours, but Arthur knew that money and influence could only buy time, not immunity. As the news of Arthur Sterling’s intention to adopt the "ballroom boy" hit the headlines, the dark forces of Leo’s past began to stir.
On a rainy Thursday afternoon, Arthur was reviewing legal documents in his study when Mrs. Gable ushered a visitor into the room.
A tall man in a tailored dark coat stepped across the threshold. His hair was streaked with gray, his face lined with the hard edges of desperate living, but his posture carried the lingering arrogance of ruined wealth.
"Arthur Sterling," the man said, his voice smooth and gravelly. "It’s been a long time."
Arthur stood up slowly from behind his desk, his eyes narrowing as he recognized the face from the police files. "Marcus Vance."
"I see you’ve met my son," Marcus said, stepping toward the center of the room and looking around at the priceless artwork adorning the walls. "Imagine my surprise when I turned on the news in a dingy airport hotel and saw my bloodline dancing under crystal chandeliers in your house."
"You abandoned him five years ago," Arthur said, his voice dangerously low. "You left a five-year-old child to freeze on the streets while you fled your creditors."
"A temporary setback," Marcus replied with a cold chuckle. "And now I'm back to claim what's mine. Child Protective Services is very keen on biological family reunification, Arthur. Unless, of course, a wealthy man like you wants to make a private settlement to buy out my parental rights."

Arthur stepped around his desk, standing inches from Marcus. "You won't get a single penny, Vance. And you will never touch that boy again."
Marcus’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly, desperate sneer. "Then I’ll see you in court, Sterling. Let’s see how the judges feel about an billionaire keeping a child from his lawful father."
