Chapter 12: The Battle in Family Court

Courtroom 3B of the City Family Courthouse was packed to capacity. On one side sat Arthur Sterling, flanked by his team of high-powered attorneys, with Leo sitting quietly between Arthur and Lily. On the other side sat Marcus Vance and a ruthless, low-grade custody lawyer hired with loaned money.
Marcus’s attorney took the podium first, painting a tragic picture of a ruined businessman forced into hiding by criminal debt collectors, now returned to reclaim his beloved son.
"My client made mistakes, Your Honor," the lawyer argued, gesturing toward Marcus, who put on a convincing display of remorse. "But he is this boy’s biological father. Mr. Sterling is a stranger who used his vast wealth to take a vulnerable child into his home without legal authorization!"
Judge Thomas, a stern woman with decades on the bench, looked down over her glasses at Arthur's lead counsel. "Does the defense have a response?"
Arthur didn't wait for his lawyer. He stood up, looking directly at the judge.
"Your Honor, four days ago, this boy walked into a ballroom barefoot, wearing rags," Arthur said, his voice echoing with deep emotion. "He didn't come looking for food, shelter, or money. He came because three years ago, a dying woman on a hospital bench gave him a promise to keep. He saved my daughter’s spirit when every medical professional in this state had given up."

Arthur turned to look at Marcus. "Marcus Vance didn't come to this court out of love. He came because he saw a price tag on his son's head. I ask the court to listen to the only voice that truly matters in this room: Leo’s."
Judge Thomas nodded slowly. "Young man, step up to the bench."
