Chapter 6: After the Music Stopped

The grand ballroom remained enveloped in profound silence long after the orchestra's last notes had dissolved into the high ceilings. Guests stood frozen along the marble perimeter, watching as Arthur Sterling pulled both children into his arms right there on the floor.
Lily was exhausted, her small body trembling uncontrollably from the sheer physical toll of those few miracle steps, but her arms were locked tightly around the barefoot boy’s neck. Arthur held them both, his expensive tuxedo jacket staining with street dust as he wept without shame.
"What is your name, son?" Arthur asked, his voice muffled against the boy's worn linen shirt.
"Leo," the boy whispered into the crook of Arthur's shoulder. "Just Leo."
By the time the hotel manager and security chief gathered the courage to approach, Arthur had already wiped his face and stood up. The cold, impenetrable real estate mogul who had walked into the gala hours ago was gone. In his eyes was a sharp, fiercely protective fire.
"Mr. Sterling," the manager stammered, holding out a glass of water. "We are so deeply sorry for this breach of security. We will have the vagrant boy removed through the back—"
"Touch him, and I will buy this hotel by morning just to fire every person in this room," Arthur interrupted, his tone so deadly quiet that the manager stumbled back two steps.

Arthur bent down and gently scooped Leo into one arm while cradling Lily in the other. Leo flinched slightly at the sudden warmth of human contact, unused to being held rather than pushed away, but as Arthur pulled him close, the boy let out a long, ragged sigh and rested his dusty forehead against Arthur’s shoulder.
With five hundred cameras flashing and the city's highest society looking on in utter astonishment, Arthur Sterling walked out of the ballroom, carrying the daughter who had learned to stand and the homeless boy who had taught her how.
