Chapter 14: The Final Verdict
Judge Thomas didn't hesitate. She slammed her gavel down on the wooden block.
"Based on the severe evidence of prior abandonment, child endangerment, and the clear, articulate testimony of the minor, this court finds Marcus Vance unfit to exercise parental rights," Judge Thomas declared firmly. "Parental rights are hereby permanently terminated. Emergency adoption proceedings in favor of Arthur Sterling are granted effective immediately."
Marcus stood up, his face red with fury, yelling at his lawyer, but two court bailiffs immediately stepped forward, placing him under arrest for unpaid state child support warrants and fraud charges stemming from his past bankruptcy. As Marcus was led away in handcuffs, he looked back at Leo, but the boy didn't flinch. He had already turned his back on the shadow of his past.
Outside the courthouse, a swarm of reporters waited under the bright afternoon sun. Flashbulbs went off as Arthur, Leo, and Lily emerged onto the wide granite steps.
Arthur paused at the top of the stairs, turning to Leo. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small legal document stamped with the state seal.
"It's official, son," Arthur said, tears brimming in his eyes. "You're a Sterling now."
Lily leaned against Leo’s side, holding onto his arm with both hands. "Does that mean you're my real brother now?"

Leo looked up at the sky, feeling the warm sunlight on his face—no longer a street child running from the cold, but a son, a brother, and a guardian of a sacred trust.
"Yeah, Lily," Leo smiled, pulling her close. "Forever."
