Chapter 8: The Shadow in the Records
By the next afternoon, news of the "Ballroom Miracle" had set the city ablaze. Newspapers and television channels ran blurred photographs of the barefoot boy holding the heiress beneath the chandeliers. Reporters camped outside the gates of the Sterling Manor, clamoring for an exclusive statement.
Inside his home office, Arthur ignored the ringing phones. He sat at his mahogany desk beside Detective Richard Hayes, a trusted family friend and retired police investigator.
"You asked me to run his prints and check the missing persons registry, Arthur," Hayes said, sliding a thick blue folder across the wood. "What I found doesn't make any sense."
Arthur opened the folder. Inside was a birth certificate, but vast sections had been redacted or altered.
"His name is indeed Leo," Hayes explained, tapping a paper. "Leo Vance. He was born at Saint Jude Memorial Hospital ten years ago. But look at the parents' signatures."
Arthur scanned the document. The mother's line was listed as Deceased upon delivery. The father's line bore a name that made Arthur’s blood run cold: Marcus Vance.
Arthur gasped, standing up from his chair. "Marcus Vance? The former chairman of Vance Logistics? The man who declared bankruptcy and disappeared five years ago after his shipping empire collapsed?"

"The very same," Hayes replied grimly. "Marcus Vance was a ruthless businessman, but when his company sank, he left behind millions in debt and abandoned his five-year-old son at a private boarding school. When the school's tuition bounced, the state took Leo in. He ran away from foster care eighteen months ago and ended up on the streets near the hospital—where Eleanor found him."
Arthur stared at the photograph attached to the file: a small, smiling toddler held by a cold, distant man in a tailored suit. Marcus Vance had discarded his own son like trash when his fortune failed, leaving the boy to forage for food on the cold city streets.
