Chapter 1 - The Midnight CallThe ring of my phone broke the quiet darkness of my workshop at precisely 1:12 in the morning. I wiped grease from my hands onto a shop rag before reaching for the screen. It was my daughter, Arianne.

"Dad... please come get me before Derek kills me."

Her voice was barely a whisper, hoarse and trembling with terror. Before I could speak, a harsh male curse echoed through the speaker, followed by a heavy, sickening thud.

"Arianne!" I shouted into the mic.

The line clicked and went completely dead.

A cold rage, sharper than anything I had felt in my sixty years, swept through my veins. Within sixty seconds, my old Ford pickup was tearing down the highway toward the Vance estate on the outskirts of the city.

For six years, I had watched my daughter slowly wither away inside her marriage to Derek Vance. It started subtly—passive-aggressive insults masked as jokes, isolated weekends, and frantic apologies. Then came the screaming matches. Then the bruises carefully hidden beneath long sleeves.

Every time I confronted her, Arianne had a rehearsed excuse. "I tripped on the stairs, Dad." "I bumped into the cabinet door." "Gideon accidentally threw a heavy toy."

I had swallowed my instincts, convincing myself she was an adult and that meddling would only push her further away. But driving through the rainy night, listening to the roar of my truck's engine, I realized the bitter truth: my patience had almost cost my daughter her life.
