Chapter 18 - Bertha’s Final PleaA year before Bertha Vance’s twelve-year sentence was scheduled to end, an unexpected letter arrived from the state women’s correctional facility.

Bertha was terminally ill with advanced heart disease and had been moved to the prison infirmary. Through her court-appointed chaplain, she sent a single request: she wanted to see Arianne one last time before her time ran out.

Arianne stood in the sterile, quiet room of the medical wing. Bertha lay in a narrow hospital bed, hooked up to monitors, looking fragile, thin, and impossibly old.

"You came..." Bertha whispered, her voice a raspy shadow of the booming, arrogant tone that had once ordered me out of her mansion.

"I came because no one should die thinking their hatred had the final word," Arianne said quietly, sitting in the metal chair beside the bed.

Bertha’s pale, trembling hand reached out slightly across the white sheet. "I was wrong, Arianne. I thought... I thought protecting Derek’s secret was keeping my family alive. But I was the one who destroyed it. I destroyed my son, my husband, and myself."

Tears slipped down the deep wrinkles of her face.

"Can you... can you ever forgive me?" Bertha choked out.

Arianne looked at the dying woman for a long moment. She thought of the cold marble floor, the dark bruises on her wrists, and the years of fear. But as she looked at Bertha, she realized that holding onto hatred was a burden she no longer needed to carry.

"I forgive you, Bertha," Arianne said softly, taking her cold hand. "Not for your sake, but for mine. I won't let what you did define the rest of my life."

Bertha closed her eyes, letting out a long, peaceful breath. Two days later, she passed away quietly in her sleep. Arianne arranged for a private, respectful burial, closing the final chapter of the Vance family tragedy with grace and dignity.
