Chapter 8 - A Mother’s AwakeningWhile the financial world collapsed around the Vance family, I spent my evenings at St. Jude’s Medical Center, sitting beside Arianne’s hospital bed.

Her physical wounds were slowly healing, but the terror in her eyes remained. Young Gideon sat on the foot of her bed, coloring in a book, oblivious to the high-stakes battle raging outside his mother’s hospital room.
The door pushed open gently, and a senior officer from the district attorney's office stepped inside, carrying a thick leather folder.
"Mrs. Vance," the assistant district attorney said gently, sitting in the chair beside us. "I wanted to give you a personal update. The grand jury has indicted both Derek and Bertha Vance on multiple felony charges. Given the video evidence recovered from Gideon's tablet, bail has been formally denied."
Arianne closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "They're... they're really in jail?"
"They are in custody, and they will stay there until trial," the ADA assured her. "Furthermore, the family court judge has granted an emergency permanent protection order. Derek Vance is legally forbidden from coming within one thousand feet of you or Gideon for the rest of his life."
Tears trickled down Arianne’s cheeks, but for the first time in six years, they weren't tears of fear. They were tears of profound relief.

She turned to me, reaching out her hand. Her bruised wrists were wrapped in clean white bandages. "Dad... I'm so sorry I kept quiet for so long. I thought... I thought I could fix him. I thought if I just tried harder..."
I took her small hand into my calloused palms, kissing her knuckles gently. "You don't ever have to apologize for surviving, Arianne. You protected Gideon, and now it's my turn to protect you."
