Chapter 11 - The Return to the Desk

With Emma sleeping through her morning nap and the security detail maintaining a quiet, watchful perimeter outside, I opened my laptop on the kitchen island for the first time in weeks. Before the wedding, before Ryan and Linda had systematically dismantled my confidence and isolated me from my friends, I had been two semesters away from finishing my degree in graphic design and digital media.
Ryan had always discouraged my work, calling it a “cute little hobby” that didn't bring in enough money to justify the time away from home.
Now, with my grandfather’s trust providing financial stability and the courts systematically untangling my life from Ryan’s fraudulent accounts, I looked at the unfinished coursework waiting in my student portal.
I logged into my university dashboard. My account status was still active, though flagged for a temporary medical leave of absence following the birth. With a steady hand, I clicked past the warning banners and opened my pending assignments folder.

The digital workspace welcomed me back with clean lines, color palettes, and typography grids—a world of order and logic where every variable responded predictably to effort. Unlike my marriage, design didn't lie.
As I began sketching a layout for my portfolio redesign, Emma stirred in her bassinet upstairs, letting out a soft, sleepy yawn. I smiled, typed a quick message to my academic advisor to confirm my return for the upcoming semester, and felt the last remaining ghosts of my old life dissolve into the screen.
