Chapter 19 - The HorizonThat afternoon, a formal legal envelope arrived from the state correctional facility.

I didn't open it immediately. I placed it on the corner of my grandfather’s mahogany desk while I finished reading a bedtime story to Emma. Once she drifted off to sleep, her breathing deep and even in the quiet dark of her room, I walked back downstairs to the study, picked up the letter opener, and sliced through the paper.

It wasn't a handwritten plea from Ryan. It was a standardized notification from the parole board, accompanied by a final property lien release form.

Ryan’s appeal for early release had been formally denied based on his refusal to disclose hidden assets and his active involvement in secondary financial infractions within the prison facility. Furthermore, the court had officially cleared all lingering encumbrances on the Sterling Trust property, ensuring permanent, unassailable title ownership in my name alone.

I folded the official notification, slid it into the shredder beneath the desk, and watched as the mechanical teeth chewed the paper into fine, meaningless confetti.

The past had no power over my locks, my deeds, or my days. It was simply history—a difficult, freezing night that had taught me how unbreakable I truly was.
