Chapter 16 - Building the Network

With my degree officially completed and my portfolio earning recognition across regional design circles, my focus began to shift outward. The financial fraud and domestic abuse I had survived weren't isolated anomalies; as I started speaking anonymously with local women's advocacy groups, I realized how many mothers found themselves trapped by predatory spouses who exploited legal loopholes while they were incapacitated by postpartum recovery.
Using a designated portion of the Sterling Trust's community outreach grants, I launched a digital initiative called the Shield and Scale Project.
Collaborating with family law attorneys and financial forensic experts, the project created a secure, encrypted mobile app designed to help women audit property deeds, identify hidden debt traps, and secure immediate legal aid before domestic situations escalated.
One afternoon, sitting at the kitchen island reviewing wireframe mockups for the app's user dashboard, the front gate intercom chimed softly.
Through the security monitor, I saw a young woman standing outside with a toddler clutching her coat. She looked exhausted, her eyes darting nervously down the street.
I pressed the intercom button. “Hello? Can I help you?”

The woman looked up at the camera, tears shimmering in her eyes. “A counselor at the community center gave me this address. She said... she said Claire Whittaker might be able to help me figure out if my husband is selling out from under me.”
I stood up instantly, closed my laptop, and walked toward the heavy front door.
