Chapter 8 - The Unexpected VisitorOn Thursday morning, the intercom at the front security gate chimed softly.

I was in the middle of sterilizing bottle parts in the kitchen when the wall-mounted security monitor lit up. Standing outside the wrought-iron gates, shivering in the crisp autumn air without a coat or a car, was Linda.
She looked entirely defeated. Her hair was unwashed, her face pale and blotchy, and her designer handbag was replaced by a cheap plastic grocery bag holding what appeared to be a single change of clothes.
I pressed the audio button, my voice coming through the gate speaker crisp and neutral.
“You’re trespassing, Linda. Turn around and leave before I call the police.”
Linda dropped to her knees right there on the wet concrete outside the gate, pressing her hands together in a pathetic gesture of supplication.
“Claire! Please! Just talk to me for two minutes!” Linda sobbed into the intercom, her voice cracking with raw desperation. “The motel downtown threw me out this morning because my credit card declined. Ryan’s accounts are all frozen by the federal court. I have nowhere to go! I have no money, no food, nothing!”
I stood frozen for a second, watching her through the camera lens. The woman who had poured freezing water over my head ten days post-partum, who had sneered at my physical exhaustion and demanded hot meals while I bled in pain, was now begging for scraps on my sidewalk.
“You spent years telling me how soft I was, Linda,” I said quietly into the microphone. “You told me that when you had Ryan, you were scrubbing floors on day three. It sounds like you’re finally going to get a chance to practice what you preached.”
“Claire, please! I’m family!” she wailed.

“No,” I replied, my voice hard as iron. “You’re a trespasser.”
I cut the audio feed and tapped the screen to dismiss the camera view. A moment later, I watched from the living room window as two private security guards walked briskly down the driveway, escorting Linda away from the property line toward the public bus stop down the road.
