Chapter 15 - The New BeginningSpring arrived with a sudden explosion of green across the lawn, washing away the remnants of winter and filling the air with the scent of blooming lilac bushes.

My final project for my digital media design class sat glowing on my monitor: a comprehensive branding portfolio for independent women’s shelters and family support networks, featuring clean, empowering graphics and accessible legal resource guides.

When my professor’s grade notification popped up across the screen—A-plus, exceptional work with real-world application—I leaned back in my chair and let out a long, happy breath.

From upstairs came the familiar, energetic squeak of Emma’s crib mattress as she woke up from her afternoon nap, followed by a cheerful, bubbling babble that meant she was ready to start her day.

I walked up the carpeted stairs, my footsteps light and sure, and pushed open the door to her brightly lit nursery.

Emma was standing up against the wooden slats of her crib, holding onto the top rail with both hands, grinning from ear to ear as she saw me walk in.

I scooped her up into my arms, pressing a kiss to her soft cheek as she giggled and grabbed a handful of my hair.

“Ready to conquer the world, bug?” I whispered.

Emma let out a happy squeak, her tiny hands reaching out toward the window where the bright spring sunlight flooded the room.

We walked down the stairs together, stepping firmly onto floors that belonged to us, into a future we had earned.
