Chapter 3 - The Gathering of Shadows

The next morning, the fallout was catastrophic for the Sterlings. The video of Eleanor slapping a child had leaked to a prominent gossip blog. "SOCIETY MONSTER: ELEANOR STERLING ASSAULTS CHILD OVER MISPLACED BROOCH," read the headline.

Inside the sprawling Sterling penthouse on Fifth Avenue, Eleanor was pacing like a caged animal. Julian sat at the mahogany dining table, massaging his temples.

"We need a PR spin, Mother," Julian snapped. "You look like a lunatic. The board is already calling. Stock is down three percent in pre-market trading."

"Forget the stock!" Eleanor shrieked, slamming her hands on the table. "That little tramp knows! Clara knows about your father! She threatened to expose us!"

Julian froze. His arrogant demeanor cracked. "How? How could she possibly know?"

"I don't know, but she does!" Eleanor paced frantically. "If she goes to the press, or worse, if she goes to Arthur... we lose everything. The trust stipulates that only blood heirs inherit the controlling shares. You’ll be ousted. We’ll be ruined."

Julian’s eyes darkened into a dangerous glare. "Then we make sure nobody believes a word she says. We destroy her credibility. We make her look unstable, unfit, and crazy. We take the kid, and we lock Clara away in a psychiatric ward if we have to."

Meanwhile, Clara arrived at her job as a graphic designer at a mid-sized marketing firm, only to find a cardboard box on her desk. Her manager wouldn't look her in the eye.

"I'm sorry, Clara," her boss muttered. "We received a call this morning from a major client. They threatened to pull all their accounts unless we let you go. It's out of my hands."

Clara took a deep breath. Julian’s first strike. She packed her box, her mind racing. She had no job, very little savings, and the most powerful family in the city coming for her. She needed help. She needed a shield.

She pulled out her phone and searched for a name she hadn’t spoken in years: Arthur Sterling.
