Chapter 4 - The True Heir

Arthur Sterling operated out of a sleek, minimalist architectural firm in Chicago. Unlike Julian, who wore his wealth like a weapon, Arthur had walked away from the family fortune ten years ago, disgusted by his stepmother Eleanor’s manipulations and his father’s complicity.
When Clara arrived at his office unannounced, having spent the last of her credit card limit on a flight and a babysitter for Mia, Arthur’s assistant tried to turn her away.
"Tell him Clara Hayes is here," Clara insisted. "Tell him it's about his father's legacy, and it’s a matter of life and death."
Five minutes later, she was sitting in Arthur’s office. He was a tall, commanding man with sharp features and piercing gray eyes—eyes that held a depth of intelligence Julian completely lacked.
"Clara," Arthur said, studying her cautiously. "I haven't seen you since you married my half-brother. I heard about the video. Is your daughter alright?"
"She has a bruise covering half her face," Clara said, her voice shaking with residual anger. "Arthur, I wouldn't be here if I wasn't desperate. Julian and Eleanor are trying to destroy me. They got me fired this morning. Next, they’ll come for custody of Mia."
"Why?" Arthur asked, leaning forward. "Eleanor hates you, yes. But they usually pretend you don't exist. Why go on the offensive now?"
Clara looked him dead in the eye. "Because last night, I told Eleanor I know her secret. Arthur... Julian isn't your father's son."
Arthur went perfectly still. The silence in the room stretched out, heavy and thick. "What did you say?"
Clara explained everything—the hidden safe, the blackmail files, the paternity test she had seen with her own eyes. As she spoke, Arthur’s expression shifted from disbelief to a simmering, righteous fury.
"They stole my father's company," Arthur whispered. "They pushed me out, claiming I wasn't dedicated enough to the family, all while they were parasites feeding on his name."

"I need your help," Clara pleaded. "I don't care about their money. I just need protection for my daughter. If you help me fight them, I will testify. I will help you take back everything that is rightfully yours."
Arthur stood up, extending a hand to Clara. "They picked a fight with the wrong mother. Let's go to New York."
