Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The criminal investigations moved swiftly. Without their wealth to protect them, Eleanor and Julian were exposed to the harsh reality of the justice system. Julian was indicted on multiple counts of corporate fraud, embezzlement, and tax evasion. Eleanor faced charges for blackmail and assault.
The high-society friends who had watched Eleanor slap Mia and said nothing now raced to the press to distance themselves, giving exclusive interviews about what a tyrant Eleanor had always been. The irony was poetic.
Clara watched it all unfold from the safety of her new life. With Arthur taking over the company, he insisted on compensating Clara for the years of unpaid alimony and child support Julian had cheated her out of, paying it from his own personal funds.
"You don't have to do this, Arthur," Clara said as he handed her the check.

"I do," Arthur replied softly. "You saved my father's legacy, Clara. You saved me from living the rest of my life in bitterness. You and Mia deserve the world."
Clara looked at the check. It was enough to buy a beautiful home, secure Mia’s college fund, and start her own graphic design firm. For the first time in years, she felt completely, utterly free.
