Chapter 18 - SENTENCING BROOKE

Brooke was sentenced first.

Her cooperation reduced the federal recommendation.

Her direct conduct toward Leo increased seriousness.

The judge considered:

Age.

No prior criminal history.

Cooperation.

Restitution.

Role under Evelyn.

Independent choices.

She received a custodial sentence followed by supervision.

Financial restitution.

Permanent restriction from charitable fiduciary roles.

Professional limits on work involving vulnerable populations during supervision.

Not decades.

Not probation only.

She cried.

Her attorney emphasized she had turned against Evelyn.

The judge said:

“Cooperation after harm is relevant. It does not transform participation into whistleblowing.”

Correct.

Brooke’s ex-husband attended.

No children between them.

Her life after prison would be difficult.

Possible.

I did not want her destroyed forever.

I wanted her away from Leo.

Those are different wishes.
