Chapter 25 - EVELYN’S LAST LETTER

Evelyn aged in custody.

Heart disease.

Arthritis.

No dramatic karmic illness.

Her attorneys requested compassionate-release review years later.

The court considered age, health, offense history, risk, and reentry plan.

I submitted:

“I do not oppose medically appropriate treatment. I request continued no contact unless Leo chooses otherwise.”

She transferred to a secure medical facility.

Eventually released under supervision late in life.

Leo was an adult by then.

He declined contact.

Evelyn wrote one final letter before she died.

He chose to read it after her death.

I did not.

His letter.

Not mine.

He told me one sentence:

I thought your mother’s fear could be used because fear made people believe she was unstable. I understand now that fear was the most reasonable thing in the house.

I said nothing.

Leo folded the letter.

No forgiveness ceremony.

No inherited obligation.
