Chapter 19 - SENTENCING EVELYN

Evelyn’s sentencing filled another day.

Her attorneys presented decades of philanthropy.

Real achievements.

The prosecution presented abuse of power.

I spoke.

“Evelyn did not give Leo his infection.”

I wanted that first.

“She did something I understand less easily. She saw his fever and decided that helping him could wait because my fear was useful.”

Evelyn looked down.

“She turned an infant’s illness into evidence against his mother.”

Then:

“She also turned my exhaustion into psychiatric evidence. My hunger into instability. My screaming behind a locked door into proof I should be locked somewhere else.”

I looked at the judge.

“I am not asking you to erase every woman she helped through the foundation. I am asking you not to let those women become payment for what she did to us.”

Adam spoke afterward.

“My mother knew I avoided conflict.”

His voice shook.

“She built part of her plan around that weakness.”

Then:

“I hit her. I took responsibility. Her crimes do not make my punch right. My punch does not make her crimes less real.”

That sentence was the man I wanted to remain married to.

Evelyn received a lengthy custodial sentence adjusted for age, role, financial losses, child risk, and absence of prior convictions.

Restitution.

Forfeiture of fraud-derived gains.

Permanent bans from foundation and fiduciary governance.

Supervised release.

No contact with me or Leo without future court approval.

No automatic total loss of legitimate personal assets.

Her appeals remained available.

Justice did not require fantasy.
