CHAPTER 27 — The High-Profile Shadow

The American media market loves a fallen prince, and Julian’s newly retained white-collar defense team knew exactly how to feed the twenty-four-hour news cycle. By Tuesday morning, the appellate twist wasn't just a legal motion; it was a viral sensation.

Valeria sat in a dimly lit conference room across from a man who looked like he had been genetically engineered in an elite corporate law firm. Marcus Vance, a top-tier media consultant and high-stakes crisis manager, leaned back in his leather chair, methodically rotating a gold signet ring on his finger.

"They are going to paint you as a cold, calculating femme fatale who engineered a public execution," Marcus said, sliding a sleek tablet across the polished mahogany table. "Look at the morning talk shows. They aren’t talking about his violence anymore, Valeria. They’re debating whether your father used his badge to orchestrate a high-society ambush. They’re turning Julian into a victim of overreaching state authority."

Valeria didn't look at the screen where a split-screen debate showed a pundit shaking his head. "The truth is on the paper, Marcus. The medical records, the forged signatures, the 2.8 million pesos. A circus on television doesn't change the facts."

"The truth is boring, Valeria. Controversy sells commercial slots and drives subscription metrics," Marcus countered sharply, leaning forward until his shadow fell across her blueprints. "And it gets worse. Julian’s mother, Ofelia, just posted a five-million-dollar cash bail through an anonymous shell company registered in Delaware. She’s already booked an exclusive, primetime live interview with a national network for Friday night. She’s going to weep on camera and talk about how you ruined her son's life out of jealousy."

Valeria stood up, the chair scraping softly against the floor. She walked to the floor-to-ceiling window looking down at the rainy Chicago street. A black SUV with tinted windows and an idling engine was parked directly across the street. It had been there for three days, its grill pointed toward her building like a predatory animal waiting for its target to emerge.

"Let them talk," Valeria whispered, her forehead resting against the cool glass.

"No," Marcus said, his voice dropping an octave, dead serious. "If you stay silent in this country, the public assumes you’re bleeding out behind closed doors. Silence is interpreted as guilt. We need to strike back before her interview airs on Friday. We host a live, televised press conference right inside your unfinished loft. We turn their legal circus into the ultimate launchpad for your alliance."

May you like

Valeria touched the heavy steel watch resting securely on her left wrist. She could still feel the phantom weight of Julian’s fingers gripping her jaw, but underneath it, she felt the cold, unyielding reality of the metal.

"He wants a stage," she said softly, turning around to face Marcus with a terrifyingly calm smile. "I will give him an auditorium."
