CHAPTER 28 — The Press Conference

The brick loft was suffocatingly hot, packed wall-to-wall with reporters, cameramen, and local activists. Heavy equipment cables snaked across the concrete floor like black vines. The bright, aggressive glare of studio lighting cut through the dust, blinding anyone who stepped into its center. The air was thick with the scent of ozone, damp raincoats, and cheap coffee.

Valeria stood behind a wooden podium. She wore no diamond necklaces, no gold rings, no expensive designer labels. Just a sharp, perfectly tailored navy blazer and her natural skin, completely refusing to hide the faint silver scar near her hairline.

A prominent reporter from a major national network shoved a microphone forward, his voice cutting through the ambient noise of clicking camera shutters.

"Ms. Salgado! Julian Moreno's appellate lawyers claim the wristwatch recording used to secure his conviction constitutes an illegal wiretap under state law! They are alleging malicious prosecution. Do you feel your father abused his office to protect you?"

The room went dead silent. The clicking stopped. Dozens of lenses zoomed in on her face, searching for a micro-expression of fear, anger, or hesitation. Valeria knew that somewhere inside a maximum-security prison, Julian was staring up at a mounted television screen, waiting for her to break.

Valeria looked directly into the primary camera lens, locking eyes with the invisible millions watching.

"My husband didn't confess because of a hidden microphone," Valeria said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely devoid of emotion. It bounced off the exposed brick walls with absolute authority. "He confessed because his arrogance made him feel invincible. He confessed because he truly believed that in a room filled with thirteen wealthy, influential guests, they would all choose his beautiful lie over my ugly reality. He thought his status bought him immunity."

She didn't wait for a follow-up question. She pressed a button on the small digital remote hidden in her palm. The massive projector screen behind her flickered to life.

The audience expected to hear the audio of the birthday slap. Instead, a massive, highly complex financial ledger illuminated the room. Columns of numbers, bank routing codes, and wire transfer confirmations flashed in stark white against a black background. It tracked the 2.8 million pesos, moving seamlessly through international waters, eventually landing directly into a private investment account under a corporate name the public hadn't heard yet: Vance Global Holdings.

In the back of the room, Marcus Vance froze. The smooth, media-trained composure he had cultivated for decades shattered in a single fraction of a second. His jaw went slack; his eyes widened as the camera crews instinctively spun their lenses away from Valeria and directly into his face.

"My father didn't trap Julian," Valeria continued, her gaze shifting calmly from the camera to the back of the room, pinning Marcus where he stood. "Julian trapped himself. And in his desperation to destroy me, he used a financial pipeline provided by the very people claiming to advise me. The appellate motion wasn't designed to find justice. It was designed to create a distraction while millions of stolen dollars were moved out of state jurisdiction."
